Yay! It's Wednesday...albeit midnight on Wednesday...but still Wednesday, so it's officially hump day here! It's also the midpoint of the Digital Dozen does Red, Green & Gold week and I must say, I'm struggling with this theme! I like festive manis as much as the next person, but I feel like I can only do so much with strict colors like red, green & gold (I think we're all feeling like this!).
Back during the 31 Day Nail Art Challenge, I did this sketched floral mani and for whatever reason, this concept popped into my head tonight. In my mind's eye this was a perfect take on some of the holly nail art I've been seeing lately and I was really excited to try and execute it.
Instead, I ended up using a golden tan instead of actual gold (Zoya's Flynn). In hindsight, I wish I had gone with a lighter background color than Flynn, but I felt it was the closest color I had to gold that wasn't actually gold. I think my aversion to it was that I didn't want the shimmer of gold polishes as my base.
To do create this look, I used some acetone to dilute down my green polishes (China Glaze's Def Defying and OPI's Don't Mess with OPI) and randomly sketched where I wanted my leaves, with the dark green first, followed by the light green. I did the same thing with the red holly berries using OPI's Lost on Lombard and Zoya's Maura, and was as messy as I wanted with my color placement.
I then went in with my black acrylic paint and added the outlines of the holly leaves and berries, not worrying about whether or not my color was within the black lines. I wanted it to be controlled scribbles! It's a pretty simple look to put together since it doesn't have to be perfect - the hardest part for me was scribbling randomly ;)
What do you think of this look? These aren't my favorite but I'm glad I was able to come up with something for today!
