31 Day Nail Art Challenge - Day 16: Tribal Print

Yay! We're officially past the half way point with the 31 Day Challenge! I am so proud of us! I didn't actually know what today's theme was until about 5 hours ago, but I was so excited to see that it was tribal print. I really like the details that must go into a tribal print and I find it really relaxing to do these (I may be the only one in the world that feels that way haha). My ring finger nail broke today so I'm down to ultra shorties so bear with me!

There are so many different types of tribal print out there but I decided to go with a print central to my area of the world - Navajo print. The Navajo tribe are from the Southwest of the United States and are the largest native american tribe still in the US and I just love the colors and patterns from their pottery and weaving.  I tried to stick to colors that were more likely to actually be used in Navajo artwork instead of the bright and crazy tribal print I've been seeing a lot of (though I do love those so much as well!).

I used OPI's My Vampire is Buff as the base and the rest of the colors are all from my acrylic paint collection (hope you don't think that's cheating!). I went back and forth on using polish versus acrylic, but I wanted to have more control over my paint so in the end I went the acrylic route.
I used one of my new detailing brushes from Michael's (an 18/0 liner) for this look and some striping tape to create the even stripes between the different shapes. Overall, I'm really happy with how this look turned out, even though I kind of feel like each nail might be too different from each other. I don't normally do skittle manis though so that may be part of why they feel disjointed to me. I wish the paint hadn't bled over into the blank space as much as it did, but I figure the Navajo didn't have striping tape and a detail brush for their art so I can't complain too much ;)
What do you think of these? Have you tried tribal print before?

Happy Polishing :)

  4. WOW. Just WOW!! I do adore this colour scheme! So earthy yet so eye-catching! :D Hahahaha! I know what you mean about the relaxing part! That's what happens when one's doing something out of passion and not obligation! :) My favs are the index and middle finger hehe!

Haha, yeah, I guess you are probably not use to it yet or perhaps you have a different 'expectation' -- erm rather than saying expectation its more of your artistic sense picking out a different vibe or calling you to different direction.. Anyway, to me they worked out well as set since they are of the same theme - Navajo artwork ;) Besides, you kept a rather consistent density of details onto each nails! :)

You definitely nailed this one! I love the outcome very much! ♥

  7. again, just wow! I'm wondering, how long did these take? (I usualy have to lie when someone asks me that question in real life, normal people don't understand, right?) and have you done the other hand like this too? I can imagine how uneasy would be painting this sort of design with your non-dominant

  9. Beside the undeniable reason of gnawing shortening your nails these propensities can harm the nail bed.sabryna
